Alfred James Shaughnessy

Alfred James (Freddie) Shaughnessy, who died shortly before 16 Nov 2005, aged 89, late Captain, The Grenadier Guards, was the chief writer and script editor of "Upstairs, Downstairs", the popular television drama series which was broadcast, to great acclaim, between 1972 and 1975. Mr Shaughnessy was heir presumptive to his cousin, the 4th Baron Shaughnessy.
He was born posthumously 19 May, 1916, son of Capt. the Hon. Alfred Thomas Shaughnessy (1887-killed in action, 1916), by his wife, the former Sarah Polk (who d. 1955, having married 2ndly, in 1920, Lieutenant-Colonel the Hon. Sir Piers Legh, GCVO, CMG, CIE, OBE, scion of the Barons Newton), daughter of Judge James C. Bradford, of Nashville, Tennessee, United States.
His paternal grandfather was the 1st Baron Shaughnessy (created in 1919).
He married in 1948, the actress Jean (Margaret) Lodge, daughter of George Lodge, of Kirkella, Yorkshire, and had issue, (i) Charles George Patrick (b. 1955), married with issue; and (ii) David James Bradford (b. 1957), who is married with issue.
Who's Who 2004 incorrectly states that the abovementioned Charles (b. 1955) has been h.p. to the Shaughnessy peerages since the demise of the 3rd Baron, 22 May, 2003.
