Stamp Godfrey Brooksbank 1922-2017

__. Stamp Godfrey Brooksbank, who died 13 April, 2017, aged 94, was a scion of that landed family, and was grandfather of Princess Eugenie of York's boyfriend, Jack Brooksbank.

He was born 14 Apr, 1922, son of Lt-Col Edward York Brooksbank (1889-1935), by his wife the former Hazel Thomas (d 1968); married firstly, Cecilia Dorothy Coke, scion of the Earls of Leicester, by whom he had two sons, David, and George; married 2ndly, Pauline _______.

He died on the day before his 95th birthday. Jack Brooksbank, Princess Eugenie's long-term boyfriend, is a son of George Brooksbank.

Robert Christopher John Barwick Ward 1942-2017

_. Robert Christopher John Barwick Ward, who died 10 April, 2017, aged 74, was a scion of the Earls of Dudley.

He was born 25 Aug 1942, son of Lt-Col. the Hon Roderick Ward (1902-52), by his second wife the former Valerie Maud Skelton, an actress. His parents divorced in 1947, and his mother married Sir Richard Barwick, 3rd Baronet, and on Feb 5 1952 Robert assumed the additional surname of Barwick by deed poll.

He married firstly, 2 March, 1968 (div 1974), Frances Pauline, daughter of Sq Leader Mathieu Einhorn. His former wife, in 1975, married Dr Keith Hampson, MP, and died as the result of an accident later that year; he married secondly, in 1976 (div. 1985), Laura Madeleine Sutcliffe, daughter of Henry Sutcliffe. He leaves a daughter from each marriage, Annabel (born in 1970), and Lucinda (born in 1980).

His home was at Langthorpe Manor, Langthorpe, Boroughbridge, and latterly at Baldersby, Thirsk.

A Memorial Service will be held at Ripon Cathedral, Tuesday  May 2.

Baron Niclas Silfverschiöld (died 2017)

.__The Swedish Royal Court has announced that Baron Niclas Silfverschiöld, the husband of Princess Désirée of Sweden, died, April 11, 2017. He was 82 years old.
 
Princess Désirée is one of the older sisters of King Carl XVI Gustav.  The couple married in June 1964 and have three children – Otto (1965), Christina-Louise (1966) and Hélène (1968) – and several grandchildren.
 
Princess Désirée is several times a descendant of Queen Victoria - from Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught & Strathearn and from Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany.

Jack Stirling Garvey (b 2017)

_. Rachael Atlanta Stirling (b 30 May, 1977), actress, partner of Guy Edward John Garvey (b 6 May, 1974), musician, and scion of Stirling of Keir, and descended from the Earls of Darnley, has given birth to a son, Jack Stirling Garvey.

Rachael Stirling is the daughter of Archibald Hugh Stirling of Keir (b 18 Sept, 1941), by his former wife the actress Dame Diana Rigg, DBE (b 20 July, 1938).

The Baroness Hambro (d 2017)

__. The Baroness Hambro, who died 27 March, 2017, aged 84, was the widow of the Baron Hambro, life peer, a member of the eponymous banking dynasty, who died in 2002.

She was the former Cherry Felicity Huggins, daughter of Sir John Huggins, GCMG, MC (1891-1971), Capt General and Governor in Chief of Jamaica, by his first wife the former Molly Green; married in 1976, as his second wife, Charles Eric Alexander Hambro (b 24 July, 1930), son of the late Sir Charles Hambro, KBE, MC, by his wife the former Pamela Cobbold. Her husband was created a life peer in 1994, and died in Nov 2002, aged 72.

The funeral is at Christchurch, Eldon Rd, London W8, 3 May, 2017.

Lady Herries of Terregles, DCVO 1940-2017

_. The Lady Herries of Terregles, DCVO, fifteenth holder of the Peerage of Scotland (cr 1489/90) died at her home 7 April, 2017. She was 76.

Lady Herries served Princess Alexandra the Hon Lady Ogilvy as Lady-in-Waiting for 53 years.

She was born Lady Mary Katherine Fitzalan Howard, 14 August, 1940, the second daughter of the 16th Duke of Norfolk, KG, GCVO, GBE (1908-75), by his wife Lavinia, Duchess of Norfolk, LG (d 10 Dec 1995), daughter of the 3rd Baron Belper.

Lady Mary was appointed a Lady-in-Waiting to Princess Alexandra in 1964; appointed CVO in 1982, and advanced to DCVO in 1995.

She married in 1986, Group Capt Anthony Mumford, CVO, OBE (deceased). No issue of the marriage.

Lady Mary succeeded her elder sister, Anne, in the Lordship of Herries of Terregles, 23 Nov, 2014.

The peerage now passes to her younger sister, Jane, born  24 June, 1945, and wife since 1975 of the 13th Marquis of Lothian.

A private funeral will be followed by a Thanksgiving Service at the Cathedral Church of Our Lady and St Philip Howard, Arundel, West Sussex, 14 Aug, 2017, on what would have her 77th birthday. A memorial service is also planned for Scotland at a later date.

_. Margaret de Went Fenton, who died 1 April, 2017, aged 85, was chatelaine of Ebberston Hall, Scarborough, North Yorkshire, and a scion of the extinct Earls Beauchamp.
 
She was born Margaret Annora Mary Lygon in 1931, daughter of Reginald Arthur Lygon (1904-76), by his wife the former Agnes Mary Louise Bell (1903-69), and married in 1955, Michael Richard West De Wend Fenton (1927-2002), of Ebberston Hall, one of the nation's smallest country houses. She was the mother of two sons and two daughters.

Priestley/Deacon marriage

__. The marriage took place, 25 March, 2017, at the Chapel Royal, St James's Palace, between Adam Alexander Priestley (b 1980), son of Commander Michael Priestley, RN, by his wife the former Linda Shade, & Rebecca Anne Deacon (b 1982), daughter of the late Major Michael John Deacon (1947-86), by his wife the Rev Selina Deacon (nee Trousdell).

The bride serves HRH The Duchess of Cambridge as private secretary, and is to leave her post in the summer of 2017, after 10 years of service to William and Kate.

Deacon is a cousin of The Duke of Cambridge, albeit distantly. Rebecca is William's 7th cousin ~ both have lines of descent from the 4th Duke of Gordon.

Charlie Browne is a son of Mr & Mrs Peter Browne, of Flempton, Suffolk, and Victoria (Vicky) is the daughter of Lt-Col John Cecil Howard-Vyse (b 1947), of Burneston, North Yorks, by his wife the former Jennifer Anne Collin.

Sonia Lady Fairfax of Cameron 1927-2017

_. Sonia Lady Fairfax of Cameron, who died 22 March, 2017, was the widow of the 13th Lord Fairfax of Cameron, and was a former Lady-in-Waiting to Queen Elizabeth II.

She was born in London in 1927, the second daughter of Capt Cecil Bernard Gunston, MC [1885-1934], by his wife the former Lady Doris Gwendoline Hamilton-Temple-Blackwood, eldest daughter of the 2nd Marquess of Dufferin & Ava; married 17 Apr, 1951, Thomas Brian McKelvie Fairfax, 13th Lord Fairfax of Cameron (1923-1964) [Peerage of Scotland, cr 1627], who died aged 40, 8 April, 1964.

Lady Fairfax  served Her Majesty the Queen as Lady of the Bedchamber [temporary] 1967-71.

She was the mother of three sons, Nicholas, Hugh and Rupert, and a daughter, Serena. The eldest son is the 14th Lord Fairfax of Cameron.

A Requiem Mass is to take place at Douai Abbey, Berkshire, Thursday 6 April, 2017.

Duke of Westminster/Harriet Tomlinson

_. The Duke of Westminster, billionaire godfather of Prince George of Cambridge, is reported to have found love with a former classmate, Chester-born Harriet Tomlinson.

The 7th Duke of Westminster [b 29 January, 1991], is the only son of the late 6th Duke of Westminster, KG, OBE [1951-2016] by his wife the former Natalia Ayesha Phillips [b 1959]  a descendant of the Royal House of Romanov, a daughter of Lt-Col Harold Pedro Joseph Phillips, by his wife the former Georgina Wernher, scion of the now extinct Wernher baronets. Georgina's grandfather was HIH Grand Duke Michael of Russia.

The 6th Duke of Westminster, KG, OBE, died suddenly from a heart attack, at Preston, Lancashire, 9 Aug, 2016. He was 64.

The 7th duke is also Marquess of Westminster, Earl Grosvenor, Viscount Belgrave and Baron Grosvenor, and a baronet.

Harriet Montgomery Taylor Tomlinson was born in Chester in 1990 - and like the duke is 26 - she is the elder daughter of Mr Grahame Montgomery Tomlinson by his second wife the former Louise A. Taylor.

Harriet has three older half-siblings, sisters Sarah and Annabel, and a half-brother, Paul.

Sir Brian Ohlson, 3rd Baronet (1936-2017)

_. Sir Brian Ohlson, 3rd Baronet, died 19 March, 2017. He was 80.

Money broker Brian Eric Christopher Ohlson was born 27 July, 1936, son of Sir James Ohlson, 2nd Baronet (1911-83), by his wife the former Marjorie Joan Roosemale-Cocq; educated at Harrow and RMA; late Lieutenant, Coldstream Guards. Succeeded to the baronetcy on the death of his father, 1983; unmarried.

He is succeeded in the baronetcy by his younger brother, Peter Michael Ohlson, who was born 18 May, 1939.

The funeral is at Mortlake Crematorium, Richmond, Thursday 30 March, 2017.

_. The Baroness Charteris of Amisfield, who died 14 March, 2017, was the widow of the Baron Charteris of Amisfield, GCB, GCVO, QSO, OBE, PC, who, as the Hon Sir Martin Charteris, was the private secretary to Queen Elizabeth II, 1972-77.

She was born 3 May, 1919 as Mary Gay Hobart Margesson, daughter of Henry Margesson, MP [later 1st Viscount Margesson] 1890-1965, by his wife the former Frances Leggett; married 16 Dec, 1944, the Hon Martin Charteris, a younger brother of the 12th Earl of Wemyss & March.

Her husband was Private Secretary to the Queen (when Princess Elizabeth) 1950-52, Assistant private secretary 1952-72, private secretary and keeper of the Queen's archives 1972-77, an extra equerry to the Queen 1956, a permanent Llord in Waiting to Her Majesty 1978-99, &c.

She was widowed 23 Dec, 1999. Lady Charteris leaves issue, a daughter (Francesca) Mary, and two sons, Andrew and Harold.

The funeral takes place at St Peter's Church, Stanway, 3 April, 2017.

Sir John Fayrer, 4th Baronet 1944-2017

_. Sir John Fayrer, 4th Baronet, died at Edinburgh, 9 March, 2017. He was 72.

John Lang Macpherson Fayrer, was born 18 Oct, 1944, son of Sir John Herbert Spens Fayrer, 3rd Baronet, DSC, by his wife the former Helen Diana Scott Lang [ d 1961], and succeeded to the baronetcy [created in 1896] upon his father's demise, 1976. Sir John was Research Officer, Moray House Institute, 1991.

Sir John was unmarried, and the baronetcy now becomes extinct.

Miranda Jane Macrae (1948-2017)

_. Miranda Jane Macrae [nee Stewart of Appin] died 6 March, 2017, aged 69.

She was born 25 Feb, 1948, daughter of Sir Dugald Stewart, 16th of Appin, KCVO, CMG (1921-84), diplomat, by his wife the former Sibyl Anne Sturrock. Her father was Chief of the Clan Stewart of Appin, &c. She married James Macrae.

The funeral is at Cardross Crematorium, Argyll and Bute, 17th March, 2017.

Hon Sir Clive Bossom, 2nd Baronet 1918-2017

_. The Hon Sir Clive Bossom, who died at his home in Sussex, 8th March, 2017, aged 99, was the Conservative MP for the Leominster Division of Herefordshire, 1959-Feb 1974, and served in the governments of Harold Macmillan and Sir Alec Douglas-Home.

He was born 4 Feb 1918, son of Sir Alfred Bossom, 1st Baronet (cr 1953), who was later ennobled as a life peer in 1960 as Baron Bossom, by his first wife the former Emily Bayne (who was killed in an air crash in 1932).

Educated at Eton; served as a Major in The Buffs, and in the War 1939-45; succeeded to his father's baronetcy, 4 Sept, 1965; married 28 Sept, 1951, Lady Barbara North, elder daughter of the late Lord North and sister of the 9th Earl of Guilford, by whom he had issue, three sons and a daughter.

Sir Clive is succeeded in the baronetcy by his eldest son, Bruce, who was born 22 Aug, 1952.

Prince Ernst August (b 1954) is a male line descendant of King George III, and is head of the Royal House of Hanover and in whom is vested the right to petition for the restoration of the Dukedom of Cumberland and Teviotdale [created in 1799, and suspended under the terms of the Titles Deprivations Act, 1917].

__. Marcus Dunbar, who died tragically and unexpectedly, 28 February, 2017, at Sammamish, near Seattle, aged 60, was a son of the late Sir Archibald Dunbar, of Northfield, 11th Baronet [1927-2015], and a elder half-brother of Sir Edward, the 12th Baronet.

He was born in circa 1966. His father's only marriage was to Amelia Davidson in 1974.

Marcus Dunbar leaves a widow, Patricia, and children, Avalon, Isla and Crinan.

Sir Adrian De La Bere, 3rd Baronet [1939-2017]

_. Sir Adrian De La Bere, 3rd (and last) Baronet, died 10 February, 2017, aged 77.

He was born 17 September, 1939, the second son of Rupert De La Bere, by his wife the former Marguerite Humphrey. His father was knighted in 1952 as KCVO, and served as Lord Mayor of London in Coronation year and was created a baronet, 18 Nov, 1953.

Sir Adrian succeeded to the baronetcy on the death of his elder brother, Sir Cameron, 18 Dec, 2014. He was unmarried.

The baronetcy now becomes extinct.

Lady Pym, widow of the former Foreign Secretary [d 2017]

__. Lady Pym [Baroness Pym], widow of Francis Pym, who was Foreign Secretary at the outbreak of the Falklands War, died 2 March, 2017. She was the former Valerie Fortune Daglish, daughter of Francis John Heaton Daglish, and married Francis Pym in 1949. Her husband was Tory MP for Cambridge 1961-83 and for Cambridge South East 1983-87. He died in 2008.

The funeral takes place at St Swithun's Church, Sandy, Bedfordshire, 16 March, 2017.

She was Maria Theresa Consuela (Sara) Ruiz de Villafranca, daughter of Don Carlos Ruiz de Villafranca [former Ambassador to Chile and Brazil], and Dona Julia Ruiz de Villafranca y Osuna, of Madrid, and married Sir Anthony in 1979.

Sir Anthony's first wife was the actress Valerie Hobson, from whom he was divorced in 1952. She later marrid John Profumo.

_. The writer Nicholas Mosley, 7th Baronet and 3rd Baron Ravensdale, died 28 February, 2017. He was 93.

He was born 25 June, 1923, the eldest son of Sir Oswald Mosley, Bt, the British fascist leader, by his first wife the former Lady Cynthia Blanche Curzon, daughter of the 1st Marquess Curzon of Kedleston [who was also 1st Baron Ravensdale].

Mosley succeeded his maternal aunt, Lady Mary Irene Curzon suo jure 2nd Baroness Ravensdale, in the barony, 9 February, 1966; married firstly, 14 Nov, 1947 [div 1974], Rosemary Laura Salmond [d 1991], dau of Marshal of the RAF Sir John Salmond; married secondly, 19 Jul, 1974,  Mrs Verity Elizabeth Bailey [nee Raymond].

From his first marriage he had three sons, Shaun, Ivo, and Robert and one daughter, Clare, and from his second marriage he had a son, Marius.

He succeeded his father in the Mosley baronetcy, 3 Dec, 1980.

Lord Ravensdale's eldest son, the Hon Shaun Mosley, who was b 5 Aug, 1949, died in 2009. The peerage, created in 1911, and the baronetcy, created in 1781, now pass to Shaun's eldest son, Daniel Nicholas Mosley, born 10 Oct, 1982.

Mrs Bradstock was the mother of two sons, Mark and Charles, and a daughter, Arabella.

_. Pauline Guinness [nee Mander], who died 18 February, 2017, aged 90, was the widow of James Guinness, CBE, a scion of the Irish brewing dynasty, and mother of the Prince of Wales's former squeeze, Sabrina Guinness.

Giles Hampden Montagu-Pollock was born 19 Oct, 1928 "after an idyllic childhood in Norway his family were taken to Germany as diplomatic prisoners in 1940. They were released in 1942 and Giles was sent straight to Eton. During his career he was at de Havilland at the dawn of the jet age. In advertising at J. Walter Thompson...."

He was the son of Sir George Montagu-Pollock, 4th Bt [1900-85], by his wife the former Karen-Sofie Dedekam, only child of Hans Ludvig Dedekam, of Oslo; married 13 June, 1963, Caroline Veronica, yr dau of Richard Francis Russell, bu whom he had issue, a son Guy, and a daughter, Sophie.

The baronetcy now passes to his only son, Guy Maximilian, who was born 27 Aug, 1966.

Dame Jennifer Jenkins [Baroness Jenkins of Hillhead, DBE] [1921-2017]

_. Dame [Mary] Jennifer Jenkins, DBE [Baroness Jenkins of Hillhead], former chairman of the National Trust, and widow of Labour Cabinet minister Roy Jenkins, died 2 February, 2017, aged 96.

She was born Mary Jennifer Morris, 18 January, 1921, daughter of Sir Parker Morris, and married the then Roy Jenkins, in 1945. Her husband served in the Labour administrations of Harold Wilson and James Callaghan, and was Home Secretary, and Chancellor of the Exchequer, became a founder member of the SDP in 1981, created a life peer, as Baron Jenkins of Hillhead, and died in 2003.

Dame Jennifer was chairman of the National Trust 1986-90, &c. and held numerous public appointments. She was cr DBE in 1985.

The 2nd Baron succeeded his father, 13 January, 1955. He married 12 Dec, 1942, Mary Carlisle Wheeler, OBE [d. 2000], daughter of Thomas Benjamin Wheeler, CBE, by whom he had issue, two sons and two daughters. The elder son, the Hon David Charles Lamb [b 8 Sept, 1944] succeeds to the peerage.

Tara Palmer-Tomkinson, scion of that landed family, was born in 1971, a daughter of Charles Algernon Palmer-Tomkinson, by his wife the former Patricia [Patti] Dawson.

Tara's great-grandmother was a member of the Smith banking family, from whom descended Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother.

Miss Palmer-Tomkinson is survived by both her parents, by a brother, James, and a sister, Santa Sebag-Montefiore.

Her second husband died 14 Aug, 1944; married thirdly, 25 June, 1953, Lt-Col. Peter Laycock, TD [d 1977]; married fourthly, 1986, Roderic More O'Ferrall [he d 1990].

She leaves a daughter, Lady Caroline Ogilvy, from the first marriage, and a son James, and daughter, Sarah from the second marriage.

Patrick David Horsfall was born in 1921, a younger son of Sir [John] Donald Horsfall, 2nd Baronet [who d 1975], and educ at Uppingham; married in 1947, June, dau of Capt S.H. Clough, of Skipton-in-Craven, & had issue. The couple are survived by a son Christopher [Kit] Horsfall, and are predeceased by a daughter, Carol Collinson.

The joint funeral service will take place at St John the Baptist, Arkholme, Carnforth, Lancashire, Friday 3 Feb, 2017.

_. Katherine Viscountess Macmillan of Ovenden, DBE, who died 22 January, 2017, aged 96, was the daughter-in-law of one Prime Minister and the great-granddaughter of another.

Lady Macmillan was the daughter-in-law of Prime Minister Harold Macmillan [1st Earl of Stockton, cr 1984] & was a scion of the Barons Harlech [cr UK, 1876].

She was born Katherine Margaret Alice Ormsby-Gore, in 1921, a daughter of the 4th Baron Harlech, KG, GCMG, PC (1885-1964), by his wife the former Lady Beatrice Edith Mildred Gascoyne-Cecil, DCVO, daughter of the 4th Marquess of Salisbury, who was son of Queen Victoria's last PM, the 3rd Marquess, &c.

Katherine married in 1942, Maurice Victor Macmillan, son of Harold Macmillan. Her husband, a Conservative MP & government minister, received the courtesy title Viscount Macmillan of Ovenden in 1984 when his father, aged 90, was ennobled with the Earldom of Stockton. Maurice Macmillan died shortly afterwards, two years before the passing of the 1st Earl of Stockton.

Viscountess Macmillan leaves two sons, Alexander, 2ho succeeded his grandfather as 2nd Earl of Stockton, and the Hon David Macmillan, & was predeceased by two sons, Joshua and Adam, and by a daughter, Rachel.

The funeral is to take place at St Gabriel's, Warwick Sq, London SW1, on Thurs 9 Feb, 2017.

Tam Dalyell (1932-2017)

_. Tam Dalyell, who died 26 January, 2017, aged 84, was a tenacious Labour MP known for the 'West Lothian question' - who was Sir Thomas Dalyell of the Binns, 11th Baronet {but did not use the title}.

He was born 9 Aug 1932, son of Lt-Col Gordon Loch, CIE, DL, JP, by his wife (Dame) Eleanor Isobel Dalyell of the Binns (de jure Baronetess). His parents assumed the surname & arms of Dalyell of The Binns (officially recognised by the Lord Lyon King of Arms); he succeeded his mother as 11th baronet upon her death in 1972 and in 1973 he successfully established his claim to the baronetcy but decided not to use the title.

He was elected Labour MP for West Lothian in 1962; became Father of the House of Commons in 2001; he left the Commons at the General Election in 2015, &c.

Tam Dalyell married in 1963, the Hon Kathleen Mary Agnes Wheatley, daughter of the life peer Baron Wheatley, by whom he had issue. He is succeeded in the baronetcy by his only son, Gordon Wheatley Dalyell, who was born 26 September, 1965.

Alexander Acloque is the only son of the late Guy Acloque by his wife the former Camilla Anne Bronwen Scott-Ellis (b 1 Apr 1947), now of Alderley, Gloucestershire, fourth daughter of the late John Osmael Scott-Ellis, 9th Baron Howard de Walden (1912-99), by his 1st wife the former Countess Irene Harrach (d 1975).

Kezia Acloque is a daughter of Mr Alan Kelsey, of London, and Mrs Sarah Kelsey, of Chelsworth, Suffolk.

Dowager Marchioness of Anglesey, DBE (d 2017)

_. The Dowager Marchioness of Anglesey, DBE, LVO, who died 21 January, 2017,aged 92, was for over 60 years the chatelaine of Plas-Newydd, Anglesey, the Paget family seat. She was the widow of the 7th Marquess.

She was born Elizabeth Shirley Vaughan Morgan, daughter of Charles Langbridge Morgan, of London, by his wife the former Hilda Vaughan; married 16 Oct, 1948, George Henry Victor Paget, 7th Marquess of Anglesey (1922-2013), who had inherited the family honours a year earlier. Her husband, who was Lord Lieutenant of Gwynedd, 1983-89, died 13 July, 2013.

Lady Anglesey leaves two sons, the 8th Marquess of Anglesey, and Lord Rupert Paget, & three daughters, Lady Henrietta Megarry, Lady Sophia Keir, and Lady Amelia Singleton.

The private funeral is to take place at St Edwen's Church, Llanedwen, Anglesey.

She was born 20 Oct, 1937, as the Hon Emma Christina Tennant, daughter of the 2nd Baron Glenconner (1899-1983), by his second wife the former Elizabeth Powell.

She married firstly, 1957 (div 1962), Sebastian Yorke, scion of the Earls of Hardwicke; married secondly, 1963 (div) Christopher John Penrice Booker, author and journalist; married thirdly, 1968 (div 1973), Alexander Claud Cockburn, descended from the Arbuthnot baronets; married fourthly, 2008, Tim Owens, writer.

Emma Tennant leaves a son from her first marriage, the author Matthew Yorke, a daughter, Daisy, from her third marriage, and a daughter, Rose, from her relationship with the publisher Michael Demspey.

1st Earl of Snowdon, GCVO 1930-2017

_. The 1st Earl of Snowdon, GCVO, society photographer and sometime brother-in-law of Her Majesty The Queen, died 13 January, 2017. He was 86.

Antony Charles Robert Armstrong-Jones was born 7 March, 1930, son of Ronald Owen Lloyd Armstrong-Jones, MBE (d 1966), by his first wife, the former Anne Messel (d 1992) (later Countess of Rosse).

He married 1stly, at Westminster Abbey, 6 May, 1960 (div 1978), HRH The Princess Margaret Rose (1930-2002), younger daughter of His Majesty King George VI and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth; married 2ndly, 15 Dec, 1978 (div 1999), Mrs Lucy Mary Lindsay-Hogg (b 1941), dau of Donald Brooks Davies.

Lord Snowdon leaves two children from his marriage to Princess Margaret, David, Viscount Linley (b 1961), who succeeds as 2nd Earl of Snowdon, and a daughter, Lady Sarah Chatto(b 1964). He also leaves a daughter, Lady Frances von Hofmannsthal (b 1979), from his second marriage. Lord Snowdon also leaves several illegitimate children from several encounters.

He was Constable & Gov of Carnarvon Castle, and appointed GCVO in 1969 after the investiture of the Prince of Wales.

Lord Snowdon, in 1999, was created a life peer as Baron Armstrong-Jones, of Nymans in the County of West Sussex.

A service of Thanksgiving for the life of the Earl of Snowdon is to take place at St Margaret's Church, Westminster Abbey, Friday 7 April, 2017.

3rd Baron Lyell, DL 1939-2017

_. The 3rd Baron Lyell, DL, died at Dundee, 11 January, 2017. He was 77.

Lord Lyell was Opposition Whip, House of Lords 1975-79; Lord-in-Waiting (Government Whip) 1979-84; Parliamentary Under-Secretary for Northern Ireland 1984-89; elected hereditary peer (Deputy Speaker - Conservative), House of Lords 1999.

He was born 27 March, 1939, son of the 2nd Baron Lyell, VC (1913-43), by his wife the former Sophie Mary Trafford (1916-2012), and succeeded his father, who was killed in action 27 Apr, 1943 (VC posthumously).

Lord Lyell was unmarried and the peerage now becomes extinct.

John Ralph Stourton (1930-2017)

_.John Ralph Stourton, who died 5 January, 2017, aged 86, was a scion of the Barons Mowbray, Segrave & Stourton, and a cousin of England's Premier Baron.

Mr Stourton's sister Mary married the 5th Earl of Gainsborough, and another sister, Monica, married Henry Greig, son of King George VI's aide, Sir Louis Greig.

He was born 25 March, 1930, second son of the Hon John Joseph Stourton (1899-1992), by his first wife the former Kathleen Alice Gunther; educated at Eton; Lieut, Grenadier Guards; Director, Liebig's Extract of Meat Co 1957-68, Brooke Bond Liebig 1968-74, Interocean Shipping Agency 1974-92, &c.

He married (1) 11 Dec, 1958 (div 1965) Virginia Hordern; married (2) 26 July, 1967, Caroline Honor O'Dwyer, and leaves issue, a daughter from the first marriage, & a daughter from the second marriage.

A Service of Thanksgiving is to be held at Christ Church, East Stour, Gillingham, Dorset, 28 January, 2017.

Lady Anne-Louise Mary Hamilton-Dalrymple (1932-2017

_. The Lady Anne-Louise Hamilton-Dalrymple, who died at her home, at Leuchie, North Berwick, East Lothian, 7 January, 2017, aged 84, was the wife of  Sir Hew Fleetwood Hamilton-Dalrymple, GCVO, 10th Baronet (b 9 Apr 1926), and was a scion of the Earls of Albemarle.

She was born Lady Anne-Louise Mary Keppel, 17 March, 1932, the only child by his second wife of the 9th Earl of Albemarle (1882-1979), by his 2nd wife the former Diana Cicely Grove (Countess of Albemarle, DBE); married 25 Sept, 1954, Maj Hew Fleetwood Hamilton-Dalrymple, who succeeded his father in 1959 as the 10th baronet.

Lady Anne-Louise leaves issue, three sons, Hew (b 1955), the Rev John (b 1957), and William (b 1965).

Ralph Newman Gilbey (1925-2016)

_. Ralph Newman Gilbey, who died at Yeovil, 22 December, 2016, aged 91, was a scion of the Gilbey baronets, and father of James Gilbey, Princess Diana's "Squidgy".

He was born 2 March, 1925, second son Francis Newman Gilbey, OBE, by his wife the former Mary Jump; married 10 Oct, 1949, Barbara Scott, by whom he had issue, three sons, Thomas, Francis and James, and a daughter, Helen.

The funeral ~ a double funeral with that of his son Francis who survived him by only a week ~ is to take place at the Church of St Luke & St Teresa, Wincanton ~ on 16 January, 2017.

Francis Newman Gilbey (1953-2016)

_.Francis Newman Gilbey, who died at Yeovil, 29 Dec, 2016, aged 63, was a scion of the Gilbey baronets, and a brother of James Gilbey -- Princess Diana's "Squidgy".

He was born 12 May, 1953, second son of Ralph Newman Gilbey (1925-2016), by his wife the former Barbara Scott. Unm. He died a week after his own father's demise.

Patricia Lady Ropner (d 2016)

_. Patricia Lady Ropner, who died 28 November, 2016, was the widow of Sir Robert Ropner, 4th Baronet.

She was the former Patricia Kathleen Schofield, daughter of William Edward Schofield, of West Malling, Kent, and married Robert Ropner in 1943. He succeeded his father as 4th baronet in 1962, and died 12 January, 2004.

Lady Ropner leaves a son, Sir Robert, the 5th baronet, and a daughter, Serena.

Colonel Henry Owen Hugh Smith 1937-2016

_. Colonel Henry Owen Hugh Smith, The Blues & Royals, who died 1 December, 2016, aged 79, was a distant cousin of HM The Queen, and a scion of the Smith landed family, formerly of Midhurst.

He was born 19 June, 1937, the second son of Lt-Cdr Colin Edward Smith, RN, by his wife the former Hon Elizabeth Dulcie Hotham, a sister of the 7th Baron Hotham, and had siblings, Andrew (b 1931), and Sarah (b 1932). He was educated at Ampleforth. Unm.

Christopher John Reith 1928-2016

__. Mr Christopher John Reith, who died 23 October, 2016, aged 88, was the son of Lord Reith, first Director General of the BBC, & he disclaimed this barony for life on his father's demise.

Christopher John Reith was born 27 May, 1928, son of then then John Reith by his wife the former Muriel Katharine Odhams. His father was created a Baron of the UK in 1940, and died 16 June, 1971.

Christopher Reith disclaimed the barony of Reith for life, 21 April, 1972. He married in 1969, {Penelope} Margaret Ann, elder dau of the late Henry Rowland Morris, of Beeston, Nottinghamshire, by whom he had issue, a son James, and a daughter, Julie. The son, born 2 June, 1971, succeeds as 3rd Baron Reith.

She was d of Lt-Col Philip EUSTACE SMITH MC (1889-1935) of Rothley Crag, Cambo, Northumberland, and Eleanor CLAYTON (1887-?). She m 1946, as his 2nd w, Maj 8th Duke of LEINSTER (1914-2004) and had two sons including the present 9th Duke of Leinster. Her 2nd son, Lord John FitzGERALD, d in 2015, and it's his only son Edward (b 1988 and unm) who is hp to his uncle. Others in line to the dukedom are:

Born 15th July 1922: died 12th December 2016. The funeral will take place at midday on Saturday, 17th December at Hatfield Parish Church. There will be no memorial service. She was d of Capt Hon Valentine Maurice WYNDHAM-QUIN (1890-1983), scion of the DUNRAVEN and MAYO earls, and Marjorie Elizabeth PRETYMAN (1897-1969), scion of the BRADFORD & SCARBROUGH earls, etc etc. She me 1945 the 6th Marquess of SALISBURY and had six sons and a dau.

Dearly loved mother of Caroline, Jane and Emma, grandmother and great-grandmother. Funeral at St John's Church, Bishopstone, near Salisbury SP5 4AS at 12 noon on Tuesday 20th December. No flowers. She was d of 10th Earl of CAVAN and (1865-1946) and his 2nd w Lady (Hester) Joan BYNG (d 1927) d of 5th Earl of STRAFFORD and Emily Georgina KERR (d 1929, 1st d of Adm Lord Frederick KERR). She m 1949  her 1st cousin once removed, Mark Frederick Kerr (1916-72), s of Lt-Col Henry Kerr LONGMAN DSO MC (1881-1958) and Mary Frances (d 1941) 4th d of Admiral Lord Frederick Herbert KERR (1818-96, s of 6th Marquess of LOTHIAN and his w a gd of 3rd Duke of BUCCLEUCH &c &c), and _ RUSSELL, and had three daus. Her grandchildren include the Marchioness of CHOLMONDELEY (b 1984) and the Countess of DURHAM (b 1982).

Queen MARY and The Princess ROYAL, Countess of HAREWOOD were godparents and she was a bridesmaid at the wedding of The QUEEN (who is godmother to Lady Elizabeth's eldest dau). As was Hon Mary Rhodes, news of whose death we posted recently.

3rd Baron Pender (d 2016)

The 3rd Baron Pender (John Willoughby Denison-Pender) died on Dec. 17, 2016. He is succeeded by his son Henry John Richard (b. 1968).

She was the former Grace Maria Kolin, dau of Dr Michael Kolin, of Dubrovnik, and married (1) Prince Stanislas Radziwill, and (2), 17 July, 1961, as his third wife, Eric, Earl of Dudley, a great friend of King Edward VIII (Duke of Windsor). Her 2nd husband died 26 Dec, 1969.

Kenelm Cornwall Legh is the 2nd son of the 6th Baron Grey of Codnor, DL (b 14 May, 1936), (Peerage of England cr 1397), of High Legh House, Knutsford, Cheshire, by his wife the former Joanna Storm Cayley (b 1947), scion of the Cayley Baronets (cr 1661).

Victoria Cornwall Legh is the eldest daughter of Mr & Mrs Howard Jones, of Foxton, Cambridge.

She was born 8 July, 1940, a daughter of Sir Richard Keane, 6th Baronet (1909-2010), by his wife the former Olivia Hawkshaw, and married Simon Pleydell-Bouverie, 24 Oct, 1961, by whom she had issue. Her husband died 3 September, 2012.

__. Sir Ilay Mark Campbell of Succoth, 7th Baronet, died at Crarae, by Inveraray, Argyll, 2 January, 2017. He was 89.

Born 29 May, 1927, succeeded his father Capt Sir George Ilay Campbell, 6th Bt, in 1967; married 1961, Matgaret Minette Rohais, only dau of James Alasdair Anderson (descended from the Earls of Halsbury), by whom he had issue, two daughters, Cecilia (b 1963), married to a MacGregor of MacGregor (eld son of the 6th Bt); and Candida (b 1964).

The baronetcy, created in 1808 (UK) now becomes extinct.

The funeral takes place on Wed 11 January, 2017, at Cumlodden Parish Church.
